Genre: Action-adventure
Developer: Pandemic Studios
Publisher: Electronic Arts
Year: 2008
Platform: PlayStation 3

Mercenaries 2: World in Flames is an open-world action-adventure game and the sequel to Mercenaries: Playground of Destruction. Developed by Pandemic Studios, the game was released for PlayStation 3 in 2008 and takes place in a fictionalized version of Venezuela, where players control a mercenary caught in a conflict over oil and political power.

The game allows players to choose from three different mercenaries, each with unique traits, and complete missions for various factions. Gameplay features a mix of vehicular combat, third-person shooting, and large-scale destruction using an arsenal of weapons, vehicles, and airstrikes. The environment is highly destructible, and players are encouraged to use explosives to complete objectives and alter the terrain.

The PlayStation 3 version includes online cooperative multiplayer for two players, allowing friends to complete the game’s campaign together. This mode was notable at release for its seamless drop-in/drop-out functionality, which supported the game’s sandbox style of gameplay. However, the online functionality was later discontinued following the shutdown of Pandemic Studios and EA’s multiplayer servers.

Upon release, the game was noted for its ambitious scope and explosive gameplay, though it was also criticized for technical issues such as inconsistent AI, glitches, and performance problems. Despite these flaws, the destructible environments and freedom of approach attracted players interested in open-world chaos.
