Genre: Action-adventure
Developer: Ubisoft Montreal
Publisher: Ubisoft
Year: 2008
Platform: PlayStation 3

Prince of Persia (2008) is a standalone reboot of the long-running series, developed by Ubisoft Montreal and released for PlayStation 3 in 2008. Departing from the narrative and gameplay of the Sands of Time trilogy, this installment features a new protagonist, a distinct art style, and a more relaxed approach to platforming and combat.

The game is set in a mythical world inspired by Persian mythology, where the Prince teams up with a mysterious woman named Elika to prevent the spread of a corrupting force known as the “Darkness.” Gameplay centers on exploration, acrobatic traversal, and light puzzle-solving as players restore corrupted regions by purifying fertile grounds. The open-world structure allows players to choose the order in which they tackle different areas.

The combat system features one-on-one encounters focused on timing and cinematic choreography. Elika plays an integral role in both traversal and combat—she can assist in platforming sequences and intervene to save the Prince from fatal situations, effectively removing traditional “Game Over” screens. This mechanic received attention for reducing frustration and emphasizing momentum and flow.

The PlayStation 3 version includes trophy support and runs at a stable framerate with enhanced visual fidelity, particularly showcasing the game’s cel-shaded, painterly art direction. It was praised for its presentation, character dynamics, and relaxed pace, although some critics found the game’s simplicity to be polarizing.
