Pro Evolution Soccer 2008 (known as Winning Eleven 2008 in some regions) is a football simulation game developed by Konami and released for the PlayStation 3 in late 2007. It marked the franchise’s first appearance on Sony’s new console, introducing a new engine adapted for high-definition systems.
The game includes standard modes such as Exhibition, League, Cup, and Master League, as well as an updated online multiplayer component. One of the key new features introduced in this edition is the “Teamvision” AI system, which dynamically adapts to the player’s playstyle to offer a more responsive and realistic challenge during matches. This system affects both offensive and defensive behaviors of the AI opponents over time.
Licensing remains limited compared to competitors, with only a handful of fully licensed teams and leagues—most notably, the English and Spanish leagues are only partially licensed, while others like the Italian Serie A are more complete. Despite these limitations, PES 2008 offers an in-depth editing mode that allows players to customize kits, names, and rosters.
On PlayStation 3, the game was criticized for technical issues not present in the Xbox 360 or PC versions, including inconsistent framerate and input lag, particularly in certain camera angles or crowded on-screen moments. These performance drawbacks impacted the gameplay fluidity, which had traditionally been a strength of the PES series.
