The Orange Box is a compilation developed by Valve Corporation and published for the PlayStation 3 by Electronic Arts in 2007. It includes five titles: Half-Life 2, its two episodic expansions (Episode One and Episode Two), the puzzle-platformer Portal, and the team-based multiplayer shooter Team Fortress 2.
The PlayStation 3 version was developed by EA’s UK-based studio rather than Valve itself, marking a notable shift in development responsibilities. The inclusion of Half-Life 2 and its episodes gives console players access to a critically acclaimed narrative-driven shooter with physics-based gameplay and atmospheric storytelling. Portal introduces innovative mechanics with its portal gun, requiring players to solve puzzles by manipulating space. Team Fortress 2 brings stylized, class-based multiplayer action to the package, although this version lacks the regular updates that the PC version received.
At launch, the PlayStation 3 version was criticized for technical shortcomings, including inconsistent frame rates, longer load times, and network issues—particularly in Team Fortress 2. Despite these drawbacks, the overall content offering was widely recognized as substantial, with over 40 hours of gameplay spanning diverse genres and play styles.
The compilation is notable for introducing Portal, which gained widespread acclaim for its originality and humor, and for extending the Half-Life storyline for console audiences. However, it remains one of the few major Valve releases not handled directly by the company on PlayStation 3.
