Mighty No. 9 is a side-view action-platform game released in 2016, developed in collaboration between Comcept and Inti Creates. Players control a robot named Beck, the ninth unit in a series of advanced robots known as the “Mighty Numbers,” in a futuristic sci-fi setting. The story begins when a virus causes the other Mighty Numbers and robots to go haywire, and Beck must neutralize them and discover the source of the corruption.
Gameplay is inspired by earlier Mega Man titles; it features 2D platforming with both run-and-gun sections and boss battles. Beck uses a primary weak weapon, but after sufficiently damaging enemies he can dash into them to absorb “Xels” — nanomachine-based collectibles that bestow temporary abilities like extra defense, speed, or projectiles.
The game offers a selection of stages that can be tackled in any order, followed by final levels that become available as progress is made. Additionally, there is co-operative play with a character named Call, whose abilities differ from Beck’s: she can shield, fall slower, and dash farther, though she cannot absorb Xels.
