Daxter is a platform game developed by Ready at Dawn and published by Sony Computer Entertainment, released in 2006 exclusively for the PlayStation Portable. The game is a spin-off of the Jak and Daxter series and takes place between the events of Jak and Daxter: The Precursor Legacy and Jak II. For the first time in the series, players control Daxter as the main character.
Set in Haven City, the game follows Daxter’s adventures as a pest exterminator while searching for his imprisoned friend Jak. The gameplay blends traditional 3D platforming with combat and exploration, featuring various tools such as a bug spray gun that doubles as a flamethrower and jetpack. The game also includes several vehicle sequences and unlockable dream minigames that parody famous films.
Built specifically for the PSP, Daxter was designed to showcase the handheld’s technical capabilities, with fully 3D environments, voice acting, and animated cutscenes. Players can also unlock content for Jak X: Combat Racing on PlayStation 2 via USB connectivity.
Critically, Daxter was praised for its polished gameplay, visuals, and faithful continuation of the franchise’s tone. It is frequently cited as one of the standout platformers on the PSP.
