Year: 2006
Platform: PlayStation Portable
Every Extend Extra is a visually distinctive puzzle-based shoot-’em-up developed by Q Entertainment and released exclusively for the PlayStation Portable in 2006. It is an enhanced reimagining of Every Extend, a freeware PC game created by Kanta Matsuhisa (Omega), and incorporates the audio-visual design sensibilities Q Entertainment became known for in earlier titles like Lumines and Meteos.
The core gameplay revolves around self-destruction rather than shooting. Players control a ship that detonates itself to trigger chain reactions among enemy units. Timing and positioning are crucial, as successful chains replenish the player’s stock and extend the countdown timer. The game features multiple stages, each with its own visual theme and music, dynamically synchronized with the gameplay.
Every Extend Extra includes several new features not present in the original freeware version. These include additional power-ups, diverse enemy patterns, boss encounters, and an all-new “Arcade Mode” structured around progressively complex levels. A Challenge Mode and a Remix Mode also expand the game’s replayability. All music is custom-composed, blending electronic and techno elements in a reactive soundtrack designed to match player performance.
The game received generally positive reviews upon release, praised for its originality, audiovisual presentation, and innovative mechanics. Critics from IGN and GameSpot noted its addictive qualities and high replay value, although some also remarked that the learning curve and chaotic visuals could be off-putting to some players. It holds a Metacritic score in the low 80s range, indicating favorable reception.
Every Extend Extra remained a PSP exclusive until the release of Every Extend Extra Extreme for Xbox 360 in 2007, which expanded upon the gameplay and visuals introduced in the PSP title.
