Golden Compass is an action-adventure game developed by Shiny Entertainment and published by Sega, released for the PlayStation Portable in 2007. The game is based on the film adaptation of Philip Pullman’s novel Northern Lights (also known as The Golden Compass), and follows the protagonist Lyra Belacqua on a quest to rescue kidnapped children and uncover dark conspiracies in a fantasy world filled with armored bears and daemons.

Gameplay combines exploration, combat, and puzzle-solving. Players control Lyra as she navigates diverse environments, uses her alethiometer (a truth-telling device) to solve puzzles, and engages in real-time combat against various enemies. The game also features companion mechanics where players can switch between Lyra and her daemon, Pantalaimon, to utilize different abilities.

The PSP version received mixed reviews, with praise often directed at the story’s faithfulness to the source material and the atmospheric presentation. However, critics pointed out repetitive gameplay, camera issues, and a limited control scheme. On Metacritic, the game holds scores in the mid-50s, indicating generally mediocre reception.

Golden Compass was released on multiple platforms, including PlayStation 2, Xbox 360, and PC, but the PSP version is a distinct adaptation tailored to the handheld’s capabilities, featuring unique level designs and simplified mechanics.
