Star Ship is a first-person space combat game originally released under the name Star Trek: The Motion Picture. After the license agreement expired, the game was rebranded and sold without references to the Star Trek franchise. Despite the name change, the gameplay and graphics remained identical.
In the game, the player takes the role of a starship pilot tasked with defending sectors of space from waves of enemy vessels. The action is presented from a cockpit perspective, using the Vectrex’s distinctive vector graphics to create a sense of depth and motion. Players must target and destroy incoming ships while avoiding collisions and managing limited resources.
The game supports two modes: a combat mode focused on shooting enemies, and a warp-travel mode where players must navigate through space obstacles. This dual-mechanic system adds variation and a sense of mission structure to the otherwise arcade-style action.
Star Ship was released exclusively for the Vectrex system and is considered one of its more ambitious attempts to simulate 3D space flight using vector graphics.
